6 affordable housing developments to share $2M

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Six groups that are developing nearly 150 affordable dwellings across Rhode Island are sharing over $2 million in federal funds for the projects.

Rhode Island Housing announced Tuesday the recipients of the second round of this year’s HOME funds. They include Church Community Housing Corp.; Habitat for Humanity South County; Neighborworks Blackstone River Valley Fernwood; Omni Development Corp.; Sankofa Apartments; and Washington County Community Development Corp.

The board approved the funds last month. It will help develop 145 homes and apartments in Burrillville, Exeter, Providence, North Kingstown and Tiverton.

The federal HOME program is the largest block grant to state and local governments to support housing for low- and moderate-income families. The money can be used to acquire property, rehabilitate existing properties or build new homes.

WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwired – Oct 20, 2014) – Nineteen nonprofit community development organizations were recognized today for their excellence in sustainable business and housing practices by NeighborWorks America. To date, 61 network members have earned the NeighborWorks Green Organization designation.

This is the third annual round of designations for the NeighborWorks Green Organization program, which celebrates community development nonprofits that demonstrate a comprehensive commitment to sustainable operations — both the lines of business they conduct and the corporate operations that they run. Together, these green organizations demonstrate that when sustainable practices are comprehensively applied, people are healthier, homes are more affordable, employees have a better work environment, communities thrive and organizations are more prepared for the future.

“Everyone benefits from green, sustainable living — families, businesses and communities,” said Chuck Wehrwein, acting chief executive officer of NeighborWorks America. “The organizations that receive this designation from NeighborWorks America show that green business practices improve people’s health and well-being.”

The 61 NeighborWorks Green Organizations together own more than 50,000 affordable apartments and have built or rehabilitated more than 7,100 green rental and for-sale homes in the past two years. Through the organizations’ participation in this program, 4,200 employees are experiencing a healthier, greener working environment. Last year, they educated more than 9,500 households seeking to purchase or owning a home on the core elements of healthy and sustainable homes.

Residents and business owners benefit from neighborhood marketing and branding initiative

WASHINGTON, July 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Seventeen communities from around the country have been selected for an initiative that will help them attract and retain residents, businesses and investment, announced NeighborWorks America, a national nonprofit corporation that creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities.

The 17 organizations will work intensively over the next year with expert marketing consultants and local stakeholders to develop marketing plans for their target neighborhoods. These plans will include strategies to reposition the neighborhoods’ images and brands in their regional housing markets.

“A community needs a positive story to create a sense of pride and catalyze investment,” said Ascala Sisk, director of the Stable Communities Initiative at NeighborWorks America. “Despite negative perceptions, these neighborhoods have strengths upon which they can build. Through this program, NeighborWorks America is helping communities to bolster these strengths and spread the word about those assets in a way that resonates.”

NeighborWorks America launched the Neighborhood Marketing Program in 2012 and has been working with 16 organizations through the first round of the initiative to create strong neighborhood brands and rebuild market demand. The first round participants have been implementing a range of creative strategies to promote their neighborhoods, including hosting neighborhood events and new logo launch parties, and creating neighborhood associations.
